National Poison Prevention Week: Easter Hazards for Pets

This week, March 20-26, is National Poison Prevention Week. The week happens to fall right before Easter Sunday this year, which is March 27. Before your home becomes filled with chocolate and Easter eggs galore this weekend, make sure to take note of poisons and toxicities your pets might be exposed to this springtime.

Microchips Increase Chances of Finding Lost Pets

According to The American Humane Association, more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the U.S every year. One in three pets will become lost at some point during their life. The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia offers $10 OFF Microchips in our Wellness Clinic every MONDAY! That is a $15 savings! (Regular pricing is $25 for a U.S chip, $30 for an International chip).

Microchips are suitable for cats and dogs. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice, which means that the process is quick, easy, and painless. Having a microchip tremendously increases the likelihood of finding your lost pet. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure the safety of your pet. Plus, save some money on a Monday, when you visit us on Microchip Monday!

Microchips are available at HSNEGA Mon-Fri, 10-4, no appointment needed. Feel free to call us at 770-532-6617, ext. 243 for additional information.

10 Facts About Dogs You Probably Didn’t Know

images
When you’ve been around HSNEGA long enough, you learn a lot of tidbits about animals you never thought you would know, whether through research or just by asking everyone. Some are cool, some are gross, and some are just weird, but either way, they are usually pretty interesting. Since HSNEGA mostly shelters cats and dogs, most of our “did you know?’s” are about cats and dogs. Without further ado, here are 10 facts you probably didn’t know about dogs, 5 are from research and 5 are from yours truly… staff member at HSNEGA!

Five Facts from the Internet:

  1. The reason dogs’ noses are always so wet is because the mucus on their nose traps scents, and they then lick their nose to get a better sense of the scent.
  2. Dogs have a third eyelid that closes horizontally.
  3. Dogs sweat from the pads on the bottom of their paws.
  4. Dogs sleep curled up to protect their organs while the sleep.
  5. Dogs have 42 teeth! That’s 10 more than humans.

Five Facts from the HSNEGA Team:

  1. It doesn’t matter if your dogs are brother and sister, father and daughter, or mother and son… they will still mate and reproduce with one another. That’s why it is important to have your pets surgically altered (“fixed”).
  2. One male and one female dog and their offspring  can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
  3. Male dogs can smell a female dog in heat from miles away, which may explain why your female dog keeps getting pregnant but you never see the daddy dog.
  4. Male dogs have nipples just like human males do. Owners often mistake male nipples for a tick.
  5. Dogs can hear four times the distance of a human.

Do you know any interesting facts about dogs? We’d love to hear them in the comments!
