This installment of Ten with the Team highlights a member of the Humane Society’s Adoption Center team, Jackie Canup, Customer Care Specialist, who joined HSNEGA in May 2015. Jackie greets visitors to HSNEGA, helps customers in the Adoption Center, and assists owners who come in for vaccines and other Wellness Clinic services.
- Tell us briefly about your current position.
I do ALL kinds of things… Answer phones, check in people for Wellness Clinic and process adoptions on occasion.
- What do you love most about your work?
The animals and the people I work with every day! Everyone here shows so much caring and compassion in everything they do. They rock!
- What accomplishment during your tenure makes you the most proud?
Helping the at-need animals we help everyday makes me feel like we are making a difference in the world!
- What is your most memorable story involving HSNEGA?
One afternoon when I arrived home from work, I was pulling our big trash can up from the road because it was trash day and I didn’t want to leave it down there overnight. As I was pulling it up the hill, I heard something whimpering, I opened it to find a tiny little puppy wrapped in trash bags and shoved to the bottom of the can. I was shocked that someone could do something so horrible to such a helpless little puppy.
I quickly called some of my team members and they were so very willing to help out! I fed, watered, made her comfy for the night… oh, and named her Savvy. The next day, I brought her in to and she was vaccinated and, a couple of days later when she was feeling much, much better (because the staff here are fantastic at their jobs!), she was spayed.
It was a bitter sweet moment for me while I was processing her adoption paperwork with probably the most amazing home Miss Savvy could have ever found. I was so excited for her to have a home, but sad to see her leave.
- If you were to tell one person “Thank You!” for helping me become the person I am today, who would that be?
My little girl! She has turned me into who I am today, and without her I would still be very lost!
- What mottos do you live by?
Live, Laugh, Love.
- What inspires you?
Once again my child. She helps me see the good in the world. No matter what I’ve been through in a day, all I have to do is look at her and my whole day turns around!
- What would you be doing if you weren’t in animal welfare?
Hairdresser. It’s my second passion. I love when people sit down in my chair and are very unhappy, but when they leave, it’s like I’ve changed their world! It feels good to make other people happy! I guess that’s why I still do it on the side. 🙂 I enjoy seeing that smile on people’s faces! They walk out like they could rule the world and I gave them that feeling.
- How do you recharge?
The lake. Fishing. Anything to do with being outside in nature. I LOVE the summer time!
- What super power would you like to have?
Super speed because I feel like I never have enough time in the day to do what I need to do!
