This installment of Ten with the Team highlights a member of HSNEGA’s Animal Care & Adoption team. Jenn Stillerman, Adoption Counselor, started volunteering with HSNEGA in July 2002, and began working part-time as the Saturday Customer Care team member in our Adoption Center in 2008. In early 2014, Jenn came on board full-time as HSNEGA’s first-ever Adoption Counselor and, during the past 18 months, has been an integral part of decreasing our return rate for adoptable animals by 40+%.
1. Tell us briefly about your current position.
I am the adoption counselor at HSNEGA. My job involves matching animals with potential adopters. I am responsible for working with adopters to make sure that the pet they are choosing is a good fit for them and their lifestyle.
2. What do you love most about your work?
I love finding forever homes for all of the animals. It’s very rewarding to see the happiness in the faces of a family who is about to take home a pet. It also is rewarding to watch the animals leave the Adoption Center and to know they are going to be spending that night in a home as a member of a loving family.
3. What accomplishment during your tenure makes you the most proud?
I am most proud that the number of previously adopted animals returned to HSNEGA has been reduced since the adoption counselor position has been created.
4. What is your most memorable story involving HSNEGA?
I can remember being the off-site adoption specialist many years ago and traveling to Alpharetta every weekend. I owned a Chevy Cavalier with fold down seats and I would put up to 10 crates filled with animals in my car at a time! Those rides to Alpharetta are some of my noisiest (and smelliest) memories!
5. If you were to tell one person “Thank You!” for helping me become the person I am today, who would that be?
My friend and mentor Karen Miller. She was the first person I worked with in animal rescue more than 20 years ago. She taught me so much about animal welfare and helped me to realize that I could use my passion for animals to save lives.
6. What mottos do you live by?
One of my favorite mottos is “Life is short – Play with your pets!” Another favorite is “Cleaning with pets in your house is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos!”
7. What inspires you?
My two children inspire me… I learn more from them each day!
8. What would you be doing if you weren’t in animal welfare?
If I weren’t in animal welfare I would be a special education teacher. A teacher with lots of classroom pets, of course!
9. How do you recharge?
I love to relax at home and read a good book. And I am secretly obsessed with watching HBO documentaries!
10. What super power would you like to have?
I would like to have the ability to clone myself!
